Quart Chooses Higher Tech With Its 390 Mcs Speakers

While most of the speaker industry strives to design speakers to sell for a certain price, MB Quart aims for a certain sound. Quart then designs a solid, attractive cabinet around that sound.

The Holy Grail of speaker design is to reproduce the maximum bass from the smallest box with the lowest distortion. Quart has always done well in this area but remained dissatisfied. Quart engineers continued to research ways of increasing bass without compromising other aspects of its speakers.



Last year, Quart introduced the Moving Control System (MCS). This combined the positive attributes of the two major but opposite speaker designs. Most small speakers benefit from using a sealed enclosure, known as acoustic suspension. However, acoustic suspension tends to lessen sensitivity, so that the speakers require high amplifier power. The opposite design, bass reflex (which uses a port, allowing air to move in and out of the box), raises sensitivity but can increase distortion. It also fails to deliver maximum bass from a small enclosure.

Quart`s MCS uses two port tubes that work together to enhance sound and sensitivity (or efficiency, as it formerly was called). The larger main tuning port makes the speaker react like a reflex system by producing faster woofer cone movement for a wide-range, better-defined bass. The smaller tube ventilates the larger tube, lowering distortion. The extra air allows the woofer to move quickly and accurately. Tuned to frequencies below the range of human hearing, the smaller tube affects reproduction of only the lowest bass notes. The MCS ports are not hollow like common reflex ports but are filled with just the right amount of damping material.

The Quart 390 MCS proves the advantages of MCS while maintaining the superb sound quality common to previous Quart speakers. The 390 resembles the old Quart 350 in overall size and sonic character. The small columns stand just short of a yard high and a foot deep. Inside are a high-tech 1-inch titanium dome tweeter and a 6-inch woofer. The rounded edges of the cabinet and the treatment applied to the speaker baffle (the board on which the speakers are mounted) reduce diffraction, improving the clarity of the sound. To complement MCS, Quart improved its woofer design. The woofer cone now moves farther in and out, driven by a newly extended voice coil. This is the equivalent of giving a racing car with an aerodynamic body a bigger engine.

With MCS, the 390 reproduces startlingly deep, well-defined bass. The 390 looks too small to deliver so effortlessly the lower octaves of music, whether orchestral or rock. You might find yourself believing that someone has hidden a large subwoofer in the room. An unusual facet of the MCS implementation in the 390 is a slight discontinuity from where the bass reproduced by the woofer ends and the bass from the MCS port begins.

Quart added bass without detracting from the speaker`s essential qualities. The 390 projects a magnificent stereo image. In fact, instruments and voices seem arrayed so naturally around and between the speakers that the speakers themselves seem to disappear.

The 390s reproduce music with a rare clarity and firmness of tone. Voices sound extremely accurate and very real. Some listeners might object to the lack of artificial warmth. Certain recordings sound ``hard`` and slightly thin because of the unforgiving nature of these Quart speakers.


Quart opted not to offer the 390 in the normal variety of real wood veneer finishes that grace its other models. The 390 comes in basic black ash, with options of imitation granite or marble at additional cost. Even in plain black, the Quart cabinet is finished better than many other speakers in its price range.

Admittedly, the poor exchange rate between the dollar and the deutsche mark makes Quart speakers more expensive than Quart would like. Rather than compromise sound, Quart chose to accept somewhat reduced sales in order to maintain its reputation. The 390 costs $1,100 per pair and is worth every dollar of it.
